On October 28, 2009, the Boeing Company announced that it will build it's second final assemply line for the 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston, South Carolina. The facility will also have the capability to support the testing and the delivery of the airplanes. Boeing Charleston, formerly a Vought Aircraft Industries facility, about 900 workers perform fabrication, assembly and systems installation for the 787 aft fuselage sections. Across the street, Global Aeronautica, which is owned by Boeing, about 1600 workers hold responsibility for joining and integrating 787 fuselage sections from other structural partners. The company plans on employing about 3800 workers at the North Charleston facility within 7 years. Boeing has already broken ground on the 584,000-square-foot expansion near its existing factory. Work on the first locally made 787 Dreamliner is expected to begin in 2011.

Shortly after the announcement by Boeing that they planned on building a new assembly plant in the Charleston area, Boeing and other company executives became to explore their neighborhood and home options in the tri-county area. Although the new plant will be located in North Charleston, most Charleston area communities are within a close commute to the location of the planned assembly plant. For this reason, business executives who will relocate to the Charleston area have a wide selection of communities and neighborhoods in which to purchase or rent.
